Data Analysis Technologies - Dioxin Methods-Method 8280

Product: PCDD/PCDF

Method Reference: USEPA SW-846 8280

 Overview

Method 8280A uses isotopically labeled internal standards to perform an isotope-dilution analysis and quantitation of PCDDs/PCDFs.  High Resolution Gas Chromatography- low resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRGC/LRMS) is used to separate the complex organic mixture and quantify the tetra through octa chlorinated dioxins and furans.

The results of the method are expressed as nanogram (10-9g) quantities of PCDD/PCDF and total chlorinated homologs per sample,ng/gram (ppb).  The detection limit for the method is matrix dependent and will vary from 5 to 50 ppb total for the tetra chlorinated PCDD/PCDF.

The founder of DAT, Dr. Mitchum, led the development of method 8280 while leading the Quality Assurance Division at the EMSL, US EPA.  The validation of these methods have enabled the methodology to be broadly applied throughout EPA regulatory programs.

Field Sampling Guide: DAT can supply sampling kit

Aqueous Samples:  2-1 liter amber glass (Boston Round with PTFE caps).  Check for residual chlorine and if present add 80 grams of sodium thiosulfate.

Soil/sediment samples:  Use a 4 oz soil jar with a teflon closure.

Ship all samples cooled to 4 ˚C.
